Whoga! Whoga!
October 21, 2022
Our employees here at Sycamore Run enjoy going above and beyond to ensure that our residents are well taken care of, no matter the circumstances. Recently, our Activities Department introduced a cool new way to keep our residents loose and their range of motion active.
We introduced "Whoga! Whoga!" which stands for wellness, happiness and opportunity for gentle activity! This keeps our residents moving and gives them a chance to congregate as a community and have some fun together. Whoga is a type of yoga activity focused on people who are not able to move around safely for your typical yoga. Hence the name Whoga, (wheelchair yoga).
At the beginning of the activity, residents focus on warming up with deep breathing exercises. Doing this helps grasp residents' attention and focuses them on the activity at hand. From there, they work on different range of motion exercises. To complete our daily Whoga, residents repeat the deep breathing exercise to cool down.
Our goal is to make sure our residents get this range of motion to improve their quality of life and keep them loose. We have some residents who were previously on the restorative program and have signed up for this to get a similar therapy exercise. Since we do this before lunch in the main dining hall, residents who are not signed up have been participating while waiting on their lunch to be served. It's a great way to keep them moving and a great activity to get them social with one another. Residents in the hall have been asking each other if they are going today or what they thought of the session they just had. Our residents are becoming quite the Whoga masters, if we do say!
It is so important as a long-term care facility to find fun activities for our residents that enhance their quality of life, get them out of their rooms for some adventure, and provide them with something that brings them joy. We plan activities every day here at Sycamore Run and are always looking for new, more out of the ordinary, games and programs to keep things lively.
